Southend LuminoCity will be brightening up February Half Term once more, from 16-18 February 2023, and this year it’ll be bigger and brighter than before.

One way we plan on doing this is by calling on our local creative community! In a nutshell, we're looking to work with emerging light artists to produce a new, unique installation that will wow festivalgoers and showcase our city’s creative talent.

A grant of up to £10,000 is available to the successful candidate, which is to include all artist fees, materials, and associated travel costs.

The Festival takes place across the city centre, with 10 locations available for installations. All interested artists are invited to submit proposals below, which should include a representation of your installation at the intended site.

 the installation must be:

  • Illuminated | This is an obvious one but it needs to be said. It's a light festival, so the brighter the better!

  • Bold and Innovative | We’re looking for statement pieces that will wow audiences while considering and incorporating Southend City’s architecture and infrastructure.

  • Large-scale | The festival commands large areas of the city centre, so the installation must be imposing in the space you've chosen.

  • Robust | The festival takes place outdoors in February, so it must be waterproof, and be able to stand strong gusts of wind.

 selection process:

A panel made up of Southend Tourism Partnership board members involved with curating LuminoCity will assess all applications. We aim to ensure the selected installation is high-quality work and will provide the best experience for festival visitors.

Applications will be judged on 4 areas:

  • Visitor experience | How will audiences engage with the piece? In the world of social media, will the artwork be Instagrammable, is it a selfie opportunity? Or could it be a viral TikTok video?

  • Budget | Is the artwork achievable within the set budget? Are there likely to be any overspends?

  • Quality | The installation must be produced to a professional standard.

  • Project management | Artists must produce a comprehensive management plan with time scales listed. Please also think about installation build/take down time scales.

submission deadline is  31 july 2022

Other Key Dates:

  • 1-15 August 2022 | Submission consultation period.

  • w/c 22 August 2022 | Interviews for shortlisted artists.

  • September 2022 – January 2023 | Development/build period for commission.

  • 16 – 18 February 2023 | Southend LuminoCity.
